Second hand first class
In meat and food production, a market for
second-hand machinery and equipment has
long been established. The business models
therefor are diverse.

No, it doesn‘t always have
to be brand new. In meat
and food production,
used/second-hand equipment
has long been more than an
insider tip. After all, new ma-chines
are not always state-of-
the-art, innovative and/or
efficient, but sometimes also
an expensive pleasure. There
are a number of examples of
how producers can find viable
solutions on the used machin-ery
market. And equipment
manufacturers can benefit
from the second-hand market
in the form of lucrative service
models.
One example is Reich Food-
Systems from Urbach near
Stuttgart. The company spe-cializes
in the supply of refur-bished
cooking, smoking and
maturing equipment and has
seen a strong upward trend in
recent years. “Used equipment,
delivered with a guarantee from
a specialist company, is more
in demand than ever,“ asserts
Danja Reich of Reich Food-
Systems. This is “due to a
greater need for plants for the
refinement of meat products,
but also to the interesting price,
compared with correspond-ing
new plants“. The range of
equipment for the trade and in-dustry
is becoming ever larger,
she adds.
Used is sustainable
Apart from purely technical
aspects, sustainability also
speaks in favor of used equip-ment.
Danja Reich: “Environ-mental
awareness is becoming
much more important than it
used to be. Why should a still
good, intact plant with minor
defects be scrapped straight
away? Such behavior is no
longer in keeping with the
times.“ She attests that thor-oughly
overhauled plants gen-erally
have the same service
life as new plants because all
wearing parts such as valves,
pneumatic cylinders or heat-ing
elements are replaced with
new parts. During a general
overhaul, he says, the plant
control system is replaced by
state-of-the-art, reliable micro-electronics.
The chamber body
itself is predestined for long
service due to its predominant-ly
stainless steel construction.
Anyone who is not sure about
his choice can obtain com-prehensive
advice from Re-ich

from first hand: Company
boss Wolfgang Reich cares
personally for the concerns of
the (prospective)customers.
In more than 40 years he has
been involved in the manufac-ture
of smoking systems, he
has literally amassed a wealth
of experience.
