this is a unique transport system developed by
Sealpac, which ensures exact positioning of the
trays under the filling system. Once the packs
have been filled, the walking beam system
ensures that the liquid contents are transported
safely without contaminating the cup rim. An
A7 tray sealer then reliably seals the trays and
transports them on to the lidding station. Here,
the first Sealpac DA-M770 lidding system clicks
another empty tray onto the sealed soup cup.
Immediately following, the second Sealpac
DA-M770 lidding system places a snap-on lid
on the empty click-on tray, which will later be
stocked with fresh ingredients in the grocery
store. Finally, the trays are passed through X-ray
inspection, labeled on the top and bottom, and
automatically packed into cartons.
The use of the new line also optimizes the
soup production process at MatBørsen. The
respective variant is now produced in a tumbler.
It is then pumped into a cooling system and
portioned at 4 to 6°C after only about an hour
under MAP sealed with the Sealpac A5, thus
reducing the residual oxygen content in the
packaging to less than 0.4 percent. This now
significantly extends shelf life to up to 30 days.
However, the new packaging not only counter-
acts food spoilage, but also ensures that the
use of materials is also more resource-efficient,
as Freddy André Henriksen explains: „We were
able to reduce the consumption of plastic pack-aging
material by up to 120 tons in 2018.“
Convenient ready meal
MatBørsen‘s soups in the innovative packaging
are available exclusively at the Meny supermar-ket
chain in Norway, which operates around
200 stores across the country. On the spot, the
consumer chooses preferred soup varieties and
selects fresh ingredients to go with them, which
are filled into the top empty click-on container.
The bowl of ingredients is weighed, fitted with
the snap-on lid, clicked onto the soup bowl
and labeled with the appropriate price tag.
Before consumption, the consumer later simply
removes the lid foil from the soup tray using the
easy-open peel tab, adds the fresh ingredients
to the soup and heats the product for a few
minutes.
Henriksen is very satisfied with the result
and praises the good cooperation and direct
communication between the partners in-volved
during the project: „Sealpac and MPack
accepted the challenge and adapted to our
wishes. For example, one of our specifications
was that the lid of the sealed click-on tray
should not be fixed too tightly, as it has to be
removed again at the point of sale for filling
with the fresh soup ingredients.“ In response,
Sealpac developed a lidding system that on the
one hand ensures that the lid does not fall off
during transport or at the point of sale, but on
the other hand can be easily removed later for
filling.
Expansion of production
The new packaging system for the proven soups
is paying off: After the changeover, production
volume at MatBørsen has skyrocketed. „Cur-rently,
we produce four different soups. Our top
seller is a tasty fish soup. We fill about 50,000
click-on cups of that alone per month. The real
idea behind this packaging innovation, how-ever,
was to reduce the food waste associated
with the original bulk packaging,“ the controller
emphasizes. Thanks to its success, MatBørsen is
now expanding production. Henriksen describes
the company‘s plans for the future: „To create
more space, we will put a new building be-tween
the existing factory buildings, connecting
them. More space will then allow us to fill the
click-on trays, which are placed on the soup
cups, with the fresh ingredients right here at
the plant.“ www.matborsen.no
