Freddy André Henriksen, Controller of MatBørsen
AS, presents the Click-on soup cup at the
production site in Stokke, Norway.
MatBørsen sprunghaft in die Höhe geschnellt.
„Aktuell produzieren wir vier verschiedene
Suppen. Unser Topseller ist eine schmackhafte
Fischsuppe. Allein davon füllen wir pro Monat
etwa 50.000 Click-on-Becher ab. Der eigentliche
Gedanke, der hinter dieser Verpackungsinnova-tion
stand, war allerdings die Reduzierung der
Lebensmittelverschwendung“, unterstreicht der
Controller.
Er schildert die Zukunftspläne des Unterneh-mens:
„Um mehr Platz zu schaffen, werden
wir zwischen die bestehenden Werkshallen ein
neues Gebäude setzen, welches diese verbin-det.
Mehr Raum ermöglicht uns dann, die Click-on-
Schalen, die auf die Suppenbecher gesetzt
werden, gleich hier im Werk zu befüllen. Wir
rechnen auch weiterhin mit einem kontinuierli-chen
Wachstum unseres Unternehmens in den
kommenden Jahren.“ www.sealpac.de
sellers. Norway’s MatBørsen AS, based in Stokke
south of the capital Oslo, has successfully
established itself in the growing ready-meal
market. The company was founded in 1994 by
Freddy Henriksen and his two sons, who had
previously gained many years of experience in
the meat segment. MatBørsen employs 230
people and has been part of the NorgesGrup-pen
ASA Group since 2012. At the same time,
the company has succeeded in maintaining
the character of a family business. Today, the
producer of high-quality ready meals is headed
by Dag Freddy Henriksen, one of the found-er’s
sons. Since 2012, his son Freddy André
Henriksen has been responsible for controlling,
finance, acquisitions and project management.
He explains, “The entry of Norges Gruppen has
enabled us to grow further. We’ve been able
to invest around 130 million Norwegian kroner,
including in new lines for the production of
convenience dishes.” The business is thriving,
with sales increasing from 20 million Norwegian
kroner in 2001 to about 650 million in 2018.
Freddy André Henriksen is largely responsible
for innovative new launches at the company.
To this end, MatBørsen relies on packaging lines
based mainly on components from Sealpac. The
German company from Oldenburg is a specialist
for high-tech tray sealers and thermoformers
as well as a developer of innovative packaging
concepts.
A recipe for success
Henriksen underscores the company‘s commit-ment
to high product quality: „One of the ways
we ensure this is by designating ‚chefs‘ in our
company. This is how we designate selected
employees who taste every single batch of our
dishes produced - it‘s the best possible quality
control.“ Another hallmark of MatBørsen is its
high level of innovation. The company is con-tinuously
developing new ready-meal concepts,
and in 2017, for example, introduced 60 new
products to retailers in just two months, thus
attracting the attention of consumers in the
retail sector. In addition to its particular focus on
quality and innovation, MatBørsen also prides
itself on its high level of flexibility. Freddy André
Henriksen explains: „We produce individual
products in small quantities of 100 kg as well
as in volumes of 15 tons. This is exceptional for
a medium-sized company like MatBørsen.“
Flexible equipment from Sealpac
In order to flexibly manufacture such a wide
variety of items in different production quanti-ties,
the company needs the right equipment.
In 2009, MatBørsen was looking for an efficient
line to produce the „Fresk & Ferdig“ menu
range in two- and three-chamber trays. After
a visit to Seafood Expo, Europe‘s leading trade
fair for all aspects of seafood processing and
packaging, MatBørsen‘s managers decided
on a first traysealer from Sealpac. „We saw an
A-Series traysealer at the Sealpac booth and
were immediately impressed by its flexibili-ty.“
And so MatBørsen contacted MPack AS,
Sealpac‘s Norwegian representative and also
MatBørsen‘s long-time partner. „We have been
receiving comprehensive advice from MPack for
a long time and not only purchase equipment
from them, but also have innovative packaging
systems presented to us on an ongoing basis.
In addition, MPack‘s service engineers work
closely with our in-house technicians to ensure
excellent equipment maintenance and help
us optimize the efficiency of our lines,“ says
Henriksen.
Today, MatBørsen has a total of four Sealpac A5
traysealers, spread across two buildings in the
factory buildings, and one Sealpac A7 traysea-
ler. The A5 performs fully automatic tray sea-
ling, is suitable for all types of fresh packaging
and is particularly compact and space-saving.
It efficiently processes all sealable materials and,
depending on tray type and application, seals
up to 70 packs per minute. The efficient line is
characterized by optimum production standards
without quality fluctuations. „The innovative
quick mold change system now enables us to
produce products in different tray formats in
a single day with only minimal downtime,“ says
the controller happily.
In acquiring the lines, MatBørsen relied on
Sealpac‘s and MPack‘s special competencies
in designing line solutions. One of the lines is
now used, for example, to package convenience
meals in more sustainable packaging. For this
purpose, the A5 reliably processes prefabricated
cardboard trays from Schuhmacher Packaging
in Ebersdorf. After use, the packaging tray can
be disassembled into its two main components,
the functional material (plastic inlay) and the
carrier material (cardboard or fiber material),
and disposed of separately. „This means we
now save around eight tons of plastic waste
per year,“ explains Henriksen proudly.
Another project from 2017 impressively un-derlines
the cooperative partnership between
all parties involved. Here, a completely new
packaging line was designed for an unusual
convenience packaging, the so-called click-on
soup cup. The idea for the innovative ready-to-eat
soup concept came about in a joint effort at
IFFA 2016. Until then, the soups in from Mat-
Børsen came to food retailers in bulk packaging
and were individually portioned for consumers.
Due to the products‘ only short shelf life, any
leftover soup in the bulk canisters had to be
disposed of three days after the first opening.
At this point, moreover, the soups at MatBørsen
could not be packaged until they had cooled,
usually one day after production. The producer
of convenience dishes was therefore looking
for a more efficient solution, one of the aims of
which was to extend shelf life and thus reduce
food spoilage.
Perfectly matched packaging line
Sealpac and MPack AS, together with Naber
Plastics B.V., a Dutch specialist in injection mold-ing
packaging, developed a completely new
packaging concept with a line designed specifi-cally
for packaging the soups. This starts with a
Sealpac AS-LS1200 de-stacker, which carefully
places the soup cups on the infeed conveyor.
From there, they are transported to the filling
system by means of a walking beam. Behind
