The Sterilsystems solutions minimize virus and germ contamination in all areas of the Austrian company’s production.
The substances could also come into contact
with food and, above all, pollute the environ-ment.
Humidity and wet surfaces also favor
the growth of germs or mold spores, which
necessitates high maintenance and costs for the
ventilation systems. The long-established meat
and sausage manufacturer Berger Schinken
from Sieghartskirchen in Austria therefore
added appropriate recirculating air disinfection
units to its proven combination of different
UV-C disinfection systems from Sterilsystems
GmbH just last year. Irradiating the surfaces
of conveyor and cutting belts as well as the
room air with the high-energy UV-C spectrum
inactivates up to 99.9 percent of all germs, thus
creating a permanently clean production envi-ronment.
The radiation dose is always adjusted
to the individual application to ensure safe and
at the same time efficient disinfection.
Photochemical reaction
“As a traditional regional company, we attach
great importance to sustainable and innovative
production of our approximately 60 cooked
ham specialties,“ says Bernd Maderner, Division
Manager Technology at Berger Schinken. “This
also includes our hygiene measures, which
must meet the highest standards.“ Based on
this principle, the company first decided to
use Sterilsystems‘ environmentally friendly and
resource-saving UV-C sterilization technology
in 2007. The short-wave spectrum of UV light
used, in the range of 254 nm, triggers a photo-chemical
reaction in the DNA of microorganisms
such as bacteria, yeasts, molds and viruses. In
this way, further cell division is prevented and
the germs are thus inactivated. Because only a
physical effect is harnessed, there is no need
for environmentally harmful chemical-based
biocides, which are always at risk of developing
resistance.
