Hilfe, die Maschine steht! Help, the machine has stopped! A Checklist by Allen Coding shows more process flexibility in food labelling. The food industry is strongly depen-dent on the ever increasing demands of consumers in terms of biological or ecological production, sustainability and health, and at the same time is very price-sensitive. As a result product information such as ingredients, filling quantities and traceability must be made available to the consumer directly with the product. The printing of goods or their packaging with codes, batch numbers, expiry dates etc. is therefore an important partial process in the food supply chain. Varying pa-ckaging forms, new legal regulations and changing consumption habits require that the labelling process can be quickly and easily adapted to current require-ments. More efficiency The following checklist helps production managers to flexibly and at the same time efficiently shape the common labelling process: 1. Before the start of production consi-der which events could under certain circumstances endanger the flexibility and efficiency of the labelling process. 2. Consider which time, financial and personnel costs (could) result in adap-tations to the product labelling beco-ming necessary. 3. Plan the set-up time carefully so that a change can be made quickly and smoothly with as little reject material as possible. 4. Integrate the printing system into your production system – both physically and through suitable software. 5. Do not only pay attention to automatic database connection, but also to simple configurability of the printer software. 6. Update your printer software regularly in order to ensure flexible and smooth use in the production process. 7. At an early stage seek out a professi-on partner for printing systems and/or product labelling.
